One step fining offers the most economic way of surfacing, not only in material cost but in time. One step pads are by their nature are a compromise between first and second fine pads. They must be aggressive enough to remove generator marks and elliptical error problems yet still produce a fine surface to be polished in a reasonable time. After one step fining it is recommended that a premium quality polishing pad and the polish be used to ensure the highest possible surface quality

Two step fining was the initial fixed abrasive system for the CR39 plastic lenses, and remains today as the system which will ensure the very best quality surfaces are obtained during processing. This system is often used where the lenses are to be multi or anti reflection coated, to minimise surface defects prior to coating. The coating process will no tolerate anything but the highest quality surfaced lenses
